What a Papillon's body needs
Every Papillon trait comes back to one thing: how you feed them. Here's what matters most.
-
Tiny size, high metabolism
Needs: Nutrient-dense, calorie-honest food
A Papillon eats only a few ounces a day, so every bite has to count. Freeze-dried raw packs real meat, organ and bone into small, dense portions — no fillers wasting precious bowl space.
-
Luxating patella (slipping kneecap)
Needs: Joint support + lean weight
Real meat, organ and ground bone supply natural glucosamine and chondroitin, while omega-3s calm joint inflammation — and keeping a Papillon lean takes load off those delicate knees.
-
Prone to dental disease
Needs: Low-starch, real-food diet
Like all toy breeds, Papillons build tartar fast. Minimally processed raw skips the sticky starches and sugars in kibble that feed plaque, supporting cleaner teeth between brushings.
-
Long, silky single coat
Needs: Omega-3 fatty acids
Whole-food animal and fish fats feed the skin barrier from the inside, keeping that plumed butterfly coat glossy and tangle-resistant and easing the moderate shedding.
-
Athletic, agility-ring energy
Needs: High-quality animal protein
Real meat, organs and bone fuel lean muscle and steady, all-day energy for a busy little brain and body — without the carb fillers that spike and crash.
How much to feed a Papillon
Quick answer: a healthy adult Papillon (5–10 lb) needs about 0.8–1.5 oz of freeze-dried raw per day, split across two meals. Freeze-dried is calorie-dense and measured dry — so it's much less by volume than kibble. Feed to a lean waistline and adjust every few weeks.
| Ideal adult weight | Freeze-dried per day | Per meal (×2) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 lb | 0.8 oz | 0.4 oz |
| 6 lb | 0.9 oz | 0.5 oz |
| 7 lb typical Papillon | 1.1 oz | 0.5 oz |
| 8 lb | 1.2 oz | 0.6 oz |
| 10 lb | 1.5 oz | 0.8 oz |
Starting points for a moderately active adult (~0.15 oz of freeze-dried per lb of ideal weight). Active dogs need a little more, couch companions a little less — always adjust to body condition, not the bag.

- Puppy: Papillon puppies are at real risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if they go too long between meals. Feed small, frequent meals 3–4 times a day until around four months, then settle into two or three, keeping food calorie-dense so each tiny meal counts.
- Adult: Feed to a lean, visible waist, split across two meals — morning and evening. Use the chart below as a starting point and adjust to body condition, not the bag.
- Senior: Activity may ease but appetite often holds. Trim portions to protect the waistline, keep protein high to preserve lean muscle, and lean into joint-supporting nutrition for aging knees.
Common Papillon concerns — and the diet connection
- Luxating patellaLargely inherited, but lean weight plus joint nutrients (glucosamine from bone and cartilage, omega-3) support day-to-day knee comfort and take pressure off the joint.
- Dental diseaseA real toy-breed concern — a low-starch, whole-food diet avoids the sticky sugars that feed plaque, supporting cleaner teeth alongside regular at-home dental care.
- Hypoglycemia (puppies)Tiny puppies can run low on blood sugar between meals; frequent, calorie-dense feeding helps keep their energy steady while they grow.
- ObesityInactive Papillons gain weight easily, and even a little is a lot on a small frame — measured raw feeding and a lean body condition lower the risk of nearly every other issue.
- Skin & coat healthThat long silky coat depends on the skin underneath it; an omega-rich, whole-food diet supports the skin barrier and keeps the coat glossy and resilient.
Diet supports health but doesn't replace veterinary care — ask your vet about any specific condition.
